history of valentins day

Valentine's day now is very different than what it was back in the day when it was created, now people give each other chocolates teddy bears hearts candy and the valentines cards, back then it was just the cards. The main thing that was different is that how it all began. How it simply started is that the church of Lupercalia chose mid February for this holiday to be about saint valentine. It was told that no one knew who was saint valentine but it was said that at the time he was sentenced to death because he was attempting to help the christians escape harsh roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. An imprisoned valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl possibly his jailer's daughter who visited him during his confinement. Before his death it was said that he wrote her a letter that ended with “from your valentine”. believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Valentine's day was getting popular in many places like in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and in the United States.  In the middle of the 18th century it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters. Americans probably began exchanging hand made valentines in the early 1700s. Howland in known to be making elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures like scraps.
